Emmy Nominations 2025: Severance, The Studio, and HBO Max Dominate the Field

The Television Academy announced nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards on Tuesday morning, following a record-breaking turnout of voting members. Hosted by Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song, the live presentation highlighted a strong showing from Apple TV+ and HBO Max, with Severance and The Studio leading their respective categories.
Apple TV+ emerged as a top contender, with Severance receiving 27 nominations in the drama category and The Studio earning 23 nods in comedy. HBO Max led all platforms with 142 total nominations, driven by The Penguin, The White LotusThe Last of Us, and Hacks.
This year’s list includes 33 first-time acting nominees, ranging from established film stars like Javier Bardem and Jake Gyllenhaal to newcomers such as 15-year-old Owen Cooper, recognized for his role in Adolescence. Cooper is now the youngest nominee ever in the supporting actor category for a limited or anthology series or television movie. Other first-time nominees include Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Kristen Bell, and Cristin Milioti. Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese earned his first Emmy nomination as an actor for a guest role in The Studio, while Kathy Bates made history as the oldest woman nominated for lead actress in a drama, at age 77.
Several performers received nominations across multiple categories. Seth Rogen was recognized for acting, writing, and directing for The Studio. Others with more than one nomination include Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Julianne Nicholson, Stephen Graham, and Catherine O'Hara.
In the drama race, returning nominees include The Last of Us and The White Lotus, alongside newer titles such as Hulu’s Paradise, HBO Max’s The Pitt, and Netflix’s The Diplomat. Apple TV+’s Slow Horses also returned, after earning its first Emmy last year.
In comedy, Hacks is joined by Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the BuildingWhat We Do in the Shadows, and Shrinking. The Bear returns after a strong showing in previous years, while The Studio makes its debut in the category.
For limited or anthology series, Netflix’s Adolescence competes with FX’s Dying for Sex, HBO Max’s The Penguin, and fellow Netflix titles Black Mirror and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
In the reality competition category, The Traitors returns as last year’s winner, joined by longtime contenders The Amazing Race, RuPaul’s Drag RaceTop Chef, and Survivor.
The talk series category narrowed to just three nominees this year: The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The Television Academy introduced two notable rule changes. Performers previously nominated or awarded in a lead or supporting category are no longer eligible in guest categories for the same role. Additionally, directors may now submit more than one entry per category if it's for a different program.
The 77th Emmy Awards will air live on Sunday, September 14, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and will stream on Paramount+. The Creative Arts Emmys will take place September 6 and 7 and air September 13 on FXX. Streaming will remain available on Hulu through early October.
