New Documentary Reveals Never-Before-Seen Details From Selena Quintanilla’s Autopsy, 30 Years After Her Death
Nearly three decades after the murder of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, new information surrounding the singer’s autopsy has resurfaced alongside the Netflix documentary Selena y Los Dinos: A Family Legacy. The film, which revisits the Tejano star’s brief life and enduring cultural legacy, includes material that brings renewed attention to the forensic details recorded in the hours after her death in 1995.
Selena, one of the most influential Latin artists of her generation, was killed on March 31, 1995, at age 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of her fan club and the manager of her boutiques. The shooting occurred at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, following weeks of escalating tension over allegations of financial mismanagement within Selena’s businesses. The case shocked fans across the globe and left an irreversible mark on Latin music.
According to the 1995 autopsy report, recently highlighted again as part of the broader public interest around the new documentary, coroner Lloyd White determined that Selena died from massive internal and external bleeding caused by a single gunshot wound. The bullet struck her from behind, entering the lower right part of her shoulder and traveling through her ribs and the upper lobe of her right lung before exiting her chest.
The wound, described as “perforating,” caused catastrophic damage to her subclavian artery, which supplies blood to the upper body. The rupture of that artery, along with extensive bleeding into her chest cavity, ultimately proved fatal. Emergency room physicians later confirmed that despite attempts at transfusion and surgical intervention, the blood loss was too severe for Selena to be revived.
The autopsy was conducted only three hours after her death, an accelerated timeline prompted partly by intense public interest and the extraordinary media attention the case had already drawn. The report also reflected that Selena had no other injuries aside from the gunshot wound.
Saldívar, who claimed the shooting was accidental, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder during her trial later that year. Prosecutors argued that the act was intentional, pointing to prior threats and evidence of premeditation. She was convicted in October 1995 and received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Though she became eligible for parole review this year, authorities denied the request; she will next be able to apply in 2030.
