TikTok is expanding its role in the music discovery space through a new partnership with iHeartRadio. The two companies have announced Next Up: Live Music, a live-streamed singing competition designed to spotlight emerging artists on TikTok Live. The series will run through September and culminate in a finale performance at the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank, California.

The competition reflects TikTok’s continued investment in supporting music creators on its platform, offering unsigned or independent artists an opportunity to reach wider audiences while competing for industry exposure and development tools. Unlike traditional televised talent shows, Next Up: Live Music will be broadcast entirely through TikTok Live, allowing fans to participate directly in the selection process through real-time engagement.

“TikTok LIVE gives fans the power to engage directly, support their favorite performers, and truly shape their journey to success,” said Shen Gao, Head of TikTok LIVE North America. “TikTok has long been a launchpad for musical talent, helping undiscovered artists break through and reach global audiences. Together with iHeartRadio, Next Up: Live Music is building on that legacy by turning discovery into a shared, real-time experience.”

Artists who wish to enter must meet several eligibility requirements: they must be U.S. residents aged 18 or older, have at least 50,000 TikTok followers, and either be unsigned or have label clearance to compete. Additionally, participants must own the rights to at least one original song. The submission period for auditions opens July 28 and closes August 11.

From the pool of eligible applicants, 50 creators will be selected to advance to the semi-final stage, where they will compete for a place among the final 12. These 12 finalists will perform live on September 28 at the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank. Selection throughout the competition will be based on both audience engagement including likes, views, shares, comments and evaluations from a panel of judges.

Finalists will not only perform in front of a live audience but will also receive strategic support from TikTok to help build sustainable careers beyond the competition. This includes platform training, audience development tools, and exposure through TikTok’s broader music programming initiatives.

The collaboration between TikTok and iHeartRadio combines TikTok’s influence as a driver of viral music trends with iHeart’s longstanding presence in broadcast and digital radio. Together, they aim to create a new pathway for emerging artists that prioritizes accessibility, audience connection, and real-time feedback.
