Apple TV+ is developing a 10-episode series based on Jennette McCurdy’s bestselling memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, the streaming platform confirmed this week. Jennifer Aniston is set to star in a role inspired by McCurdy’s late mother, a central figure in the memoir who McCurdy described as emotionally and physically abusive.

The dark dramedy will follow the complicated relationship between a young actress working on a popular children’s show and her controlling mother, according to Apple. The series will draw heavily from McCurdy’s personal story while adapting key elements into a scripted format.

The lead role of the 18-year-old actress, based on McCurdy’s own experiences, has not been cast.

McCurdy is co-writing the adaptation with film producer Ari Katcher. The two will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside Aniston, who continues her creative partnership with Apple TV+ following her ongoing work on The Morning Show.

First published in 2022, I’m Glad My Mom Died became both a critical and commercial success, praised for its raw portrayal of the darker side of childhood stardom. McCurdy, who rose to fame on Nickelodeon’s iCarly and later Sam & Cat, used the memoir to break her silence on the abuse she endured growing up in the spotlight.

She described how her mother’s control shaped both her public image and private life, influencing decisions about her body, relationships, and career. The memoir explored the psychological impact of early fame and the complex grief that followed her mother’s death from cancer in 2013.

A release date for the Apple TV+ series has not been announced.
