Big Thief will return this fall with their sixth studio album, Double Infinity, due out September 5 via 4AD. The announcement arrives alongside a new single, “Incomprehensible,” a sprawling and emotionally direct track that builds on the band’s signature blend of intimacy and experimentation.

The album marks Big Thief’s first release since 2022’s critically acclaimed Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, and their first as a trio following the quiet departure of bassist Max Oleartchik last year. It was recorded live over three weeks at New York’s Power Station with longtime producer and engineer Dom Monks.

“Incomprehensible,” the lead single, leans into abstraction without losing emotional weight. Over layers of guitar feedback, horns, and sitar, vocalist Adrianne Lenker sings with vulnerability: “Let me be naked alone, with nobody there… Incomprehensible, let me be.” The song explores themes of solitude, acceptance, and the desire for space, delivered with the clarity and fragility that have become hallmarks of Lenker’s writing. According to the band, the sessions embraced a sense of spontaneity and openness. Tracks were recorded live, often in a single take, to preserve the organic feeling of the performances.

The nine-song tracklist includes titles such as “Words,” “Los Angeles,” and “All Night All Day,” suggesting a continued interest in both personal narrative and poetic ambiguity. “Grandmother,” one of the album’s centerpiece tracks, includes a guest performance by Laraaji, adding a meditative layer to the arrangement.

Since their last full-length release, the members of Big Thief have remained creatively active. Lenker released her solo album Bright Future in 2024, while guitarist Buck Meek shared Haunted Mountain in 2023. Drummer James Krivchenia recently debuted Performing Belief in early 2025. Earlier this year, the band also put out an EP of unreleased material titled Passional Relations, with proceeds going to wildfire relief efforts in California.

To coincide with the album, Big Thief will embark on their Somersault Slide 360 North American tour this fall. The run begins on September 17 in Sacramento and concludes on November 7 in Houston, with stops in major cities including Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles.
