California investigators have identified the girl whose body was discovered last week in the trunk of an impounded Tesla registered to musician D4vd, though her name is being withheld until relatives can be notified.

“The decedent has been identified, but the legal next of kin notification is still pending. Information cannot be released until after the notification occurs,” a law enforcement source told Rolling Stone.

The body was uncovered on Sept. 8 at a Los Angeles tow yard after employees reported a foul odor coming from the 2023 Tesla Model Y. Authorities later confirmed the vehicle was registered to D4vd, the Houston-born singer-songwriter whose full name is David Anthony Burke.

According to a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the victim was a female with wavy black hair and a tattoo on her right index finger that read “Shhh…” The remains were described as “severely decomposed,” leading officials to believe the body had been inside the vehicle for an extended period of time before being found. Because of the level of decomposition, investigators said they could not immediately determine the girl’s age or ethnicity.

A source speaking to NBC 4 indicated the victim may have been between 14 and 15 years old at the time of death. However, no official cause of death has been released.

The Tesla was towed only after neighbors reported it had been abandoned. By the time it reached the tow yard, the vehicle had reportedly sat unattended for several days. The odor prompted employees to alert authorities, who then discovered the remains in the trunk.

Residents in the Bird Streets section of the Hollywood Hills told Rolling Stone that the vehicle had been seen parked in multiple locations in the neighborhood over the past several months. One resident said the car had been left on Bluebird Avenue for about three weeks before being moved to the spot where it was eventually towed. “It moved around,” the source recalled. “It’s chilling.” Another resident alleged the vehicle had been parked a few blocks south as early as May, shifting locations but never seeming to leave the area entirely.

Law enforcement confirmed that Burke, who is currently on his Withered World tour, was notified after the discovery. A spokesperson for the musician said he is cooperating fully with investigators.

While no connection between Burke and the victim has been established publicly, the fact that the vehicle was registered in his name has drawn attention to the case. Authorities have not commented on whether Burke himself had recently used the car or if it may have been accessible to others.
