Cardi B Announces Long-Awaited Second Album, Am I the Drama?

After six years of speculation, delays, and intermittent teasers, Cardi B has officially confirmed the release of her sophomore album. Titled Am I the Drama?, the follow-up to her 2018 Grammy-winning debut Invasion of Privacy is scheduled to arrive on September 19. The announcement was made via social media on Sunday, where Cardi B also revealed the album's cover art and a pre-order link.
“Seven years of love, life and loss. Seven years I gave them grace, but now, I give them hell,” she says. “I’m not back, I’m beyond. I’m not your villain, I’m your karma.” The clip is emblematic of the tone Cardi B appears to be setting for the new era.
Since the enormous success of Invasion of Privacy, which earned four-times platinum status and made Cardi B the first solo woman to win Best Rap Album at the Grammys, expectations for a second album have remained high. While Cardi B has remained musically active through a series of singles and collaborations, the absence of a full-length follow-up became a recurring question in interviews and fan discussions.
When Rolling Stone profiled Cardi B in the spring of 2024, she was still in the final stages of shaping the record, selecting tracks, refining the intro, confirming features, and debating its thematic direction. At the time, she acknowledged the challenge of defining an album that could reflect her increasingly complex life. “I’m a different person every single day,” she said. “Some days I want club anthems, some days I want to make something more emotional or melodic. It depends on where I am.”
Much of the delay can be attributed not only to artistic indecision but also to mounting personal pressures. Over the past year, Cardi B has been balancing the demands of global celebrity with an increasingly complex personal life, most notably, the unraveling of her marriage to rapper Offset. Their relationship, long marked by public highs and private turbulence, has been under the spotlight since their early years together. Allegations of infidelity and multiple reconciliations played out in the media, often fueling online commentary and fan speculation. In mid-2024, Cardi B filed for divorce, her second legal separation from Offset, amid renewed rumors of betrayal. The announcement came just weeks before she revealed the birth of their third child, adding another layer of emotional complexity.
The strain of maintaining privacy in the face of public dissection appears to have shaped the tone of Am I the Drama?, an album that, by all indications, confronts the tension between visibility, autonomy, and reinvention.
