Chris Brown, the Grammy-winning but often controversial R&B artist, has been arrested in England in connection with a 2023 nightclub incident, according to multiple reports. Brown, 36, was reportedly taken into custody at a Manchester hotel shortly after 2:00 a.m. on May 15 on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. The arrest relates to an alleged altercation at a venue in Hanover Square, London, on February 19, 2023.

While the Metropolitan Police declined to confirm Brown’s identity in the arrest, the department released a statement confirming that a 36-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody. The police noted, “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 02:00hrs on Thursday, 15 May, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been taken into custody, where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023.”

The arrest follows a civil lawsuit filed by music producer Amadou Diaw in October 2023, alleging that Brown attacked him during the same incident. Diaw claims in the suit that Brown “inflicted severe and lasting injuries” by striking him over the head with a tequila bottle, causing lacerations on his head and torn ligaments in his leg. Diaw’s lawsuit asserts that he required hospitalization for his injuries.

Brown, who has faced multiple legal troubles throughout his career, remains one of the most polarizing figures in the music industry. His history of violent incidents dates back to his 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, a case that dramatically altered his public image. Despite ongoing controversies, Brown continues to enjoy significant commercial success. His upcoming Breezy Bowl XX Tour is set to begin in the Netherlands on June 8, with scheduled U.K. dates in June and July, followed by U.S. dates from late July through October. According to Live Nation, the tour’s U.S. leg is nearly sold out.

As news of his arrest broke, it remains unclear how the legal developments will affect the tour, which has been a major focus of Live Nation’s 2025 earnings outlook. The company’s CEO, Michael Rapino, recently highlighted Brown’s tour as one of the year’s strongest on-sales, underscoring the artist’s continued popularity despite his turbulent legal history.

Brown’s representatives have not yet publicly responded to the reports of his arrest.
