A 23-year-old man has been arrested following a violent assault that occurred during a Rüfüs Du Sol concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena last weekend. Police identified the suspect as Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala. He was taken into custody on Thursday, Aug. 21, after investigators reviewed video footage of the incident and received assistance from members of the public. His case has been forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review before charges are formally filed.

The assault took place on Aug. 17 during the opening act of the show, which drew thousands of fans to the Rose Bowl. According to the Pasadena Police Department, three individuals were assaulted “to varying degrees” after a dispute reportedly began when a drink was spilled. Officers said Zavala became agitated and proceeded to attack several nearby attendees.

A video of the confrontation quickly circulated online, showing a man striking another person repeatedly as bystanders attempted to intervene. Blood was visible on the venue’s bleachers, amplifying public concern and prompting calls for accountability.

One of the victims, identified only as Shelby, described the encounter in a statement shared with The Festive Owl, a social media outlet that covers live music and festivals. Shelby said she inadvertently spilled a drink, which led to the man “punching me in the face, knocking me out and causing significant bleeding, while he continued attacking our group. Another friend tried to protect us, but the attacker fled into the crowd.”

Her account was consistent with the police statement that multiple people sustained injuries before the suspect escaped the immediate area.

Rüfüs Du Sol addressed the incident in a public statement, emphasizing that safety is central to their performances. “Delivering moments to our fans to gather and celebrate safely is what we live for,” the group said. “We have been heartbroken to hear of the act of violence that took place during the opening act on Saturday. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable anywhere, and the fact that this happened at one of our shows was devastating to learn about.”

The trio, whose performances are known for their immersive production and communal atmosphere, added that they were dismayed that such violence disrupted an event intended to bring people together.

The arrest followed an appeal by police for public assistance, which generated tips and additional video evidence. Officials have urged anyone with further information to come forward as the investigation continues. Formal charges will be determined by prosecutors in the coming days.

The Rose Bowl, one of Southern California’s largest and most established concert venues, has not issued a public comment on the matter.
