Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce are engaged, the couple announced Sunday after two years of dating.
The news was shared in a joint Instagram post featuring photos of the pair surrounded by flowers. “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the caption read. Kelce proposed with a ring designed by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry, set with an old mine brilliant-cut diamond. The post was accompanied by Swift’s song “So High School,” from her 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department.
The couple’s relationship became public in September 2023, when Swift attended a Chiefs game in Kansas City. At the time, many assumed it was their first date, but Swift later clarified in a Time interview that they had been together for some time before making their public appearance. “By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple,” she said. “We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”
Their first connection came earlier that year, when Kelce spoke on his New Heights podcast about attempting to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number at one of her concerts. Swift later described the gesture as endearing and said the pair began spending time together shortly after.
Kelce has acknowledged that dating one of the most recognizable figures in entertainment has been an adjustment. In a 2023 interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, he said, “Obviously I’ve never dated anyone with that kind of aura about them.… But at the same time, I’m not running away from any of it.”
He later told GQ that the relationship developed naturally. “Nothing I’ve ever done has been a controlled, organized process. We fell in love just based off the people we were sitting in a room together with,” Kelce said.
Swift, whose personal life has often been scrutinized, has indicated that she and Kelce are comfortable with the level of visibility. “When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there, and we don’t care,” she told Time. “The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
Swift’s approach with Kelce marks a contrast to her previous relationship with actor Joe Alwyn, which lasted six years and remained largely out of the public spotlight. That partnership ended in early 2023, shortly before Swift launched the Eras Tour.
With Kelce, she has been more open. She described his public mention of her on his podcast as “metal as hell” and likened his courtship to something out of an ’80s film. “This kind of felt more like I was in a John Hughes movie, and he was standing outside of my window with a boombox,” Swift said.
The couple has not released details about their wedding plans. Given Swift’s extensive song catalog, speculation has already emerged about whether her own music may feature in the ceremony.
The engagement marks a new chapter for one of the most high-profile couples at the intersection of sports and entertainment. What began with a podcast mention and a friendship bracelet has now culminated in a public commitment, underscoring how Swift and Kelce have embraced their relationship both privately and in the public sphere.
