Jimin and Jungkook, two of BTS’s most recognizable members, were officially discharged from South Korea’s military on June 11, 2025. The event marks a significant step toward a long-anticipated full-group reunion, as six of the group’s seven members have now completed their mandatory service.

The two singers exited their base at Yeoncheon, near the North Korean border, where they had been serving since late 2023. Outside the site, they were met by fans, local media, and military personnel, though the mood remained respectful and subdued. Jungkook briefly addressed his return, admitting that being in the spotlight again felt “a little embarrassing.” Jimin, known for his thoughtful public remarks, used the moment to acknowledge the service of others, encouraging people to extend kindness to soldiers they encounter.

Their discharge comes just one day after BTS bandmates RM and V completed their own military terms. Jin and J-Hope finished theirs in 2024. Suga, the final member still in service, is expected to complete his alternative civil service by June 21. When that happens, BTS will officially be positioned for the first time since 2022 to return to group activities.

Mandatory military service remains a key part of life for South Korean men, typically lasting 18–21 months. While there was significant public debate over whether BTS - arguably South Korea’s most influential cultural export - should be granted exemption, the group chose to serve, with staggered enlistments that began in late 2022.

Throughout this period, the group has maintained its visibility through solo releases and public statements. Both Jimin and Jungkook reached major milestones during their time away. Jimin became the first South Korean soloist to top the Billboard Hot 100, while Jungkook’s single “Seven” also debuted at No. 1. Despite military obligations, BTS continued to hold a place in global pop culture, even as the group paused collective activities.

The impact of their return is already being felt in the business side of the music industry. HYBE, BTS’s parent company, saw its stock price climb over 11% in June alone. Fans have started gathering again at HYBE’s headquarters in Seoul, many leaving banners and signs welcoming the members back. While there has been no official announcement of a group project or tour, momentum is clearly building.

A full reunion in 2026 is widely expected, though the group and HYBE have yet to confirm specifics. Industry analysts anticipate that BTS will likely coordinate a major release or international tour once all members are available, but the group has so far taken a measured approach to public announcements.
