Liam Gallagher Salutes Fan Who Trolled Green Day With “Wonderwall” at Live Show: “Best Song of the Night”

It’s not often that a stage crasher becomes the star of the show, and even rarer when they manage to delight a Gallagher brother in the process.
At Green Day’s June 30 concert in Luxembourg, what began as a routine fan-invite moment took an unexpected turn and quickly became one of the most talked-about surprises of the summer. It’s a longtime tradition: the band invites a fan onstage to play their acoustic staple “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” But this time, Billie Joe Armstrong wasn’t expecting what came next: the chosen fan, handed an acoustic guitar in what should have been a dream moment for any Green Day devotee, went entirely off script, breaking into the unmistakable opening chords of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” instead.
Armstrong looked confused, then mildly amused. “You told me you could play this one!” he exclaimed, trying to wrap his head around the hijack. The fan, unfazed, kept playing at least until a crew member stepped in and politely escorted him offstage. Armstrong quickly reclaimed his guitar, ending the moment with a smirking, “Nice try, nice try.”
The clip, naturally, exploded online. But while Billie Joe may have been caught off guard, Liam Gallagher was loving every second. The Oasis frontman - never one to miss an opportunity - took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his sarcastic stamp of approval. Replying to the viral video, he replied, “Best song of the night.” While it’s unlikely that Armstrong agrees, it’s a rare moment of musical mischief that managed to unite punk and Britpop worlds.
But the trolling moment arrives at a curiously poetic time. Oasis, who famously split in 2009 following one of rock’s most bitter sibling feuds, are finally back. After more than a decade of lawsuits and public jabs, Liam and Noel Gallagher are putting it on ice long enough to reunite onstage.
The official reunion kicks off July 4 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, marking the first time the band has performed together in 16 years. Fans are understandably losing their minds, and so are the Gallaghers, or at least one of them. Liam’s been hyping the comeback in true Gallagher fashion, tweeting last month: “We have LIFT OFF Rastas sounded f—ing FILTHY.” (Read: rehearsal’s going well.)
Even Bono is getting in on the excitement. The U2 frontman, who’s maintained a friendship with Noel over the years, recently told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, “I love them. I’m still very close with Noel, and he sent a message to me saying he’s kind of shocked by how great the band is [sounding]. I think we’re going to have a good summer.”
Meanwhile, Green Day continues their own global run in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Dookie, proving that punk veterans still know how to own the stage. If anything, the incident serves as a bizarrely fitting bridge between two of the biggest acts to define '90s alt-rock, and a reminder that, like it or not, “Wonderwall” will always find a way to show up when you least expect it.
