There’s something disarming about watching one of the world’s biggest pop stars admit, mid-show, that she’s been quietly crying to a post-punk love song in her bedroom. But Olivia Rodrigo has never been one to play it too cool. At her Dublin concert on Monday night (June 23), just days before she’s set to headline Glastonbury, the Guts singer paused her set to pay homage to one of Ireland’s best exports: Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C. have carved out their place as one of the most essential rock bands of the last decade. The Dublin five-piece first turned heads with their 2019 debut Dogrel, but it was Skinty Fia in 2022 that pushed them into a more expansive territory, reflecting on themes like identity and Irish heritage. Known for their intense live shows and frontman Grian Chatten’s distinct vocal style, the band has built a reputation for making music authentically.

“Lately I’ve been obsessed with this band Fontaines D.C.,” she told the crowd at Marlay Park, glowing with a sort of nervous excitement that made her feel more like your cool younger cousin than a global headliner. “I’ve been playing this song alone in my room for fun, and I was wondering if it’d be cool if I played it for you guys.” She delivered a heartfelt cover of “I Love You,” a gut-wrenching track from Fontaines D.C.’s 2022 album Skinty Fia.

It’s not the first time Rodrigo has made room in her show to spotlight her influences, far from it. She’s made it her thing. Last month, she turned Governors Ball in New York into a surprise Talking Heads appreciation session by bringing out David Byrne (!) to perform “Burning Down the House.” She is a proud “fangirl”: whether crashing No Doubt’s reunion at Coachella, screaming Hot to Go! with Chappell Roan, or duetting with country heartbreaker Tyler Childers.

This particular show in Dublin is just one stop on her Guts World Tour, which is quickly becoming a masterclass in how to make arena-sized performances feel intimate and emotionally charged. She’s already made history with sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden (where she brought out Jewel, because why not?), and next up is a massive U.K. date: BST Hyde Park on June 27, followed by her very anticipated Sunday night slot at Glastonbury’s iconic Pyramid Stage.

She’ll return to the U.S. in August for Lollapalooza.
