Rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, known professionally as Soulja Boy, was released from custody on Tuesday after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office declined to pursue felony gun charges related to his arrest over the weekend.

The 35-year-old artist had been taken into custody early Sunday morning following a traffic stop in Los Angeles. According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, Soulja Boy was arrested on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. However, in a statement sent to Rolling Stone, a representative from the District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the case had been declined due to insufficient evidence. “A case was declined due to insufficient evidence,” the office said.

Public jail records show that Soulja Boy was released shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday, roughly two days after his initial booking. Details surrounding the circumstances of the arrest remain limited. The LAPD has not disclosed the reason for the traffic stop, nor have officials confirmed whether a weapon was recovered at the scene.

The arrest reportedly occurred in the Melrose Avenue area of Los Angeles, not far from the retail location of Soulja Boy’s SODMG (Stacks on Deck Money Gang) clothing brand. The rapper has maintained a presence in the neighborhood through his fashion and merchandising business.

While the gun charge will not proceed at this time, the incident adds to a series of legal issues for the rapper in recent years. In April 2025, a Los Angeles jury awarded $4 million in damages to a former girlfriend who accused Way of physical assault, sexual battery, and ongoing harassment. The jury found in favor of the plaintiff following a civil trial that drew widespread attention due to the severity of the allegations.

In a separate incident, Soulja Boy was convicted in 2016 of unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, stemming from a 2014 arrest in the San Fernando Valley. He was sentenced to probation as part of a plea agreement in that case.

Soulja Boy first rose to fame in 2007 with the chart-topping single “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” which became a viral hit and propelled him into mainstream success at a young age. Since then, his career has included a series of music releases, social media ventures, and business projects, though he has also drawn headlines for public controversies and frequent legal entanglements.

His release on Tuesday suggests the latest incident may not result in further legal action unless new evidence emerges. Neither Soulja Boy nor his representatives have issued a public statement regarding the arrest or the decision by prosecutors to drop the case.

As of Wednesday, no formal charges have been filed, and the LAPD has not indicated whether the investigation remains open.
