Nearly twenty years after their last cinematic outing, The Simpsons will headline a new movie in 2027, with Disney confirming a theatrical release date of July 23.
Details about the plot remain under wraps. 20th Century Studios confirmed the news with a playful Instagram teaser showing Homer Simpson reaching for a sprinkle-covered donut shaped like the number “2,” accompanied by the caption: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
The release date was originally reserved for an untitled Marvel project. It will now share its premiere day with Warner Bros.’ upcoming animated musical Bad Fairies, setting the stage for one of the summer’s most closely watched box office matchups.
The announcement extends a franchise that has become one of television’s longest-running comedies. Since premiering in December 1989, The Simpsons has broadcast more than 750 episodes and remains a cornerstone of Fox’s programming slate. Matt Groening created the series with James L. Brooks and Sam Simon after first introducing the family as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. Its mix of satire and family comedy turned the yellow-hued clan into global icons.
The voice cast that has carried the show for decades remains in place. Dan Castellaneta voices Homer Simpson, Julie Kavner portrays Marge, Nancy Cartwright plays Bart, and Yeardley Smith lends her voice to Lisa. Their performances have become inseparable from the characters and central to the show’s enduring appeal.
The first big-screen installment, released in July 2007, was both a commercial and a critical success. The movie earned 536 million dollars worldwide and followed the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to encase Springfield in a giant dome after Homer accidentally polluted the town’s water supply. Critics noted the film managed to recapture the sharpness of the show’s early years.
Disney’s stewardship of the franchise adds another layer of anticipation. The company acquired 20th Century Fox in the 2019 merger, and with it, the Simpsons catalog. The new film will be the studio’s first theatrical project for the property since that acquisition, signaling its intent to keep the brand active on multiple platforms. In addition to the weekly series, the franchise has expanded into theme park attractions, merchandise, and shorts produced exclusively for Disney+.
No details on the plot have been released yet, and Disney has not confirmed which returning cast members will reprise their roles at this stage.
